Biography

David T. Hughes, M.D. is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Endocrine Surgery. Dr. Hughes graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in biology from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He went on to receive his medical degree from the Creighton University School of Medicine with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He then completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. After completing the Norman Thompson Endocrine Surgery Fellowship at the University of Michigan he served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, New York. Dr. Hughes then returned as a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan in 2012.

Dr. Hughes' clinical interests include surgical diseases of the endocrine system including the thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals and pancreas. He has a particular interest and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of papillary thyroid cancer and has a surgical practice focused solely upon the treatment of routine and complex endocrine disorders. He works within the multidisciplinary endocrine oncology team to provide the best care and outcomes for his patients.

Dr. Hughes' academic research interests include clinical research in the treatment of thyroid cancer and hyperparathyroidism as well as a focus on surgical education. He has published research in national medical journals focused on the outcomes of surgery for thyroid cancer and the treatment of recurrent thyroid cancer. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Thyroid Association, the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and the Association for Surgical Education.
