Dr. Lieberman received a B.S. from Duke University and an M.D., Ph.D. from the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore. He completed residency training in Anatomic Pathology and a fellowship in Neuropathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Following his clinical training, he performed post-doctoral research at the Neurogenetics Branch of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. Dr. Lieberman's post-doctoral training with Dr. Kenneth Fischbeck was supported by a Physician Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Dr. Lieberman joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology in August of 2001, and now serves as Director of the Neuropathology. He is a physician-scientist interested in the pathogenesis of inherited neurological diseases, and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation. His laboratory uses biochemical and genetic tools to define mechanisms of neurodegeneration so as to identify therapeutic targets.
